Note: Meet Christopher Aliotta, a caring leader who loves helping people stay healthy. He started a place called Sami Angeles ABA to make sure patients get really good care. Christopher knows a lot about business because he studied hard and got his MBA. But what he really loves is helping patients. He works super hard to make sure they feel strong and supported, especially when things get confusing in the healthcare system. The Autism Society of Arizona talked to him in 2020 to learn more about his work.
Interviewer: Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. Let's start with a basic question: What is autism?
Chris: Hi there, thanks for having me. Autism is a condition that affects the way a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. People with autism might have trouble with social skills, repetitive behaviors, or sensory sensitivities.
Interviewer: Can you tell us a bit about your work at Sami Angeles ABA and how it relates to kids with autism?
Chris: Of course! At Sami Angeles ABA, we focus on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for kids with autism. ABA therapy helps kids learn new skills and behaviors by breaking them down into smaller steps and using positive reinforcement. Our goal is to support kids with autism in reaching their full potential and thriving in their daily lives.
Interviewer: What are some common signs or symptoms of autism that parents or caregivers might notice in kids?
Chris: Some common signs of autism include difficulty with social interactions, like making eye contact or understanding emotions. Kids with autism might also have repetitive behaviors, like rocking back and forth or repeating the same words or phrases. Sensory sensitivities, like being bothered by certain sounds or textures, can also be a sign of autism.
Interviewer: How can parents or caregivers best support a child with autism?
Chris: It's important for parents and caregivers to provide love, understanding, and patience. Creating a supportive and structured environment can help kids with autism feel safe and comfortable. Seeking out resources and therapies, like ABA therapy, can also make a big difference in helping kids learn and grow.
Interviewer: Are there any misconceptions about autism that you'd like to address?
Chris: One common misconception is that autism is a one-size-fits-all condition, but it's actually a spectrum. This means that every person with autism is unique and may have different strengths and challenges. Another misconception is that autism is caused by bad parenting or vaccines, which is not true. Autism is a complex condition with genetic and environmental factors.
Interviewer: Thank you for clarifying that. Finally, what advice would you give to parents or caregivers who have a child recently diagnosed with autism?
Chris: My advice would be to take it one day at a time and remember that you're not alone. Reach out for support from friends, family, and professionals who can help guide you on this journey. Celebrate your child's strengths and successes, and don't be afraid to advocate for their needs. With love, patience, and support, your child can thrive and reach their full potential.
